Weekend in New Mexico. Sandia Peak

by

My wife and I spent a fantastic long weekend in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. The highlight might just be the massive storm that formed on the mountain at Albuquerque's Sandia Peak on Friday night.  We took the world's longest tram to the top of the mountain and as we were exploring we saw clouds bumping up against the mountains and brilliant flashes of lightning.  We sat down to a wonderful meal at the restaurant (appropriately named High Finance) and within thirty minutes the brilliant view of Albuquerque was masked by the cloud cover and we couldn't see a thing. Lightning strikes were everywhere.  When our waiter brought our desert and coffee he also brought us news that the tram would be closed until the storm passed.  In order for the tram to operate the lightning would have to stop for 15 minutes and the winds would have to drop below 65 mph!  The tram's tower #2 had taken repeated lightning strikes.  It took us almost four hours to get off the mountain and we didn't get to our room in Santa Fe until after 1am.  That trip was also eventful.  Stay tuned...
